A Christmas Eve meditation on Incarnation, reverence, and holy wonder.

Opening Prayer

Holy God,

As night settles and the world grows quiet, still our hurried spirits.

Tune our hearts to wonder.

Peel back the noise so we may hear again the old, astonishing news—

that You chose nearness over distance, flesh over flight, love over fear.

Meet us here, Emmanuel.

Amen.

SCANDALOUS.

Yes, some of the excesses we witness—even in sacred spaces—can distract from the depth and dignity of worship. But tonight, on this holy eve, let us name where the true scandal has always been.

The real scandal of Christmas is the Incarnation.

That the Eternal chose time.

That the Holy chose flesh.

That God chose to dwell among us—fully present in our humanity—yet never diminished in glory.

God entered the stuff of life without being swallowed by it. Immersed, yet undefiled. Near, yet uncorrupted. Wrapped in human skin and still radiant with heaven’s light. This is the mystery that angels announced and shepherds ran to see.

And this holy pivot still speaks to us.

If God could step into the world without surrendering holiness, then surely we can live, worship, and celebrate with joy that is both free and faithful. Embodied, but discerning. Expressive, but anchored. Alive, but attentive to the sacredness of the moment.

Freedom to be was never meant to become freedom to forget who we are—or whose we are.

On this night of soft hymns and holy hush, we are invited to hold joy and reverence together. To let wonder lead, not excess. To let love guide, not impulse. To remember that glory does not shout—it shines.

So let our worship tonight be luminous rather than loud, faithful rather than frantic, joyful without losing its center.

For the Child born among us teaches us still:

How to be in the world—

Without being claimed by it.

This is the holy scandal of Christmas.

And it is good news.

Scripture for the Night

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14

Night Benediction (For Those Reading Late)

May the hush of this holy night rest upon you.

May the Christ who came near guard your sleep and steady your soul.

May glory linger where anxiety once lived.

And may you wake tomorrow knowing—

God is still with us.

Emmanuel.

Merry Christmas.
