The Rhythm of a Church Rooted in Spirit, Rising in Purpose

INTRODUCTION

At New Unity Baptist Church, our year does not simply pass — it unfolds.

Like the ancient feasts of Israel, we mark time with intention, memory, and hope. Our calendar is not a list of dates. It is a sacred drumbeat. A spiritual migration. A testimony of a people who believe that Heaven still speaks, and the nation we must build is the one Heaven has spoken.

Across the Faith Year (September to August), three gatherings shape our identity, deepen our unity, and strengthen our witness:

Holy Convocation — our opening movement, the awakening of the Faith Year

First Fruits Celebration — our first yes, our sacrificial offering, our annual reset

Church Anniversary — our remembrance moment, celebrating 109+ years of grace

These gatherings are not “events.” They are encounters — kairos moments when the Spirit calls us together to remember who we are and who we must become.

THE THEOLOGY OF OUR GATHERINGS

Every sacred feast in Scripture functioned as:

Memory — what God has done

Meaning — what God is doing now

Mission — where God is leading the people

New Unity’s sacred gatherings follow this biblical design:

1. Holy Convocation — The Calling

Held the weekend after Labor Day, this 3-day movement launches the Faith Year with clarity, consecration, and collective purpose.

It is our moment of centering. Our annual “Let there be.”

2. First Fruits — The Offering

Celebrated the first Sunday of every January, First Fruits is our covenant act of sacred generosity.

It is our “first yes,” our commitment to begin the year with sacrifice, alignment, and faith.

3. Church Anniversary — The Remembrance

Observed the 3rd weekend of October, this is our day of gratitude — remembering the journey of 109+ years, honoring our elders, and blessing the next generation.

Together, these three movements shape the spiritual architecture of our year.

OUR SACRED ORBIT

These gatherings form a circle of life for New Unity:

Convocation calls us.

First Fruits reorients us.

The Anniversary reminds us.

And all three prepare us to walk boldly through the Faith Year with intention, unity, and Spirit-filled purpose.

WHY WE GATHEr

A theological reflection on sacred time in the life of New Unity Baptist Church.

Across Scripture and throughout the Black church tradition, gathering has never been casual. It has always been covenant — a way of remembering, resisting, and rising together.

We gather because the Spirit calls us.

We gather because our elders taught us.

We gather because a scattered people can survive, but a gathered people can rise.

Holy Convocation roots us in purpose.

First Fruits aligns our year with sacrifice and order.

Our Anniversary binds us to the legacy of more than 109 years of witness.

These three sacred moments shape the rhythm of our Faith Year and train our hearts to move as one family, one nation, one holy people under God.

This is why we gather.

Not out of habit.

Out of covenant.

The nation we must build is the one Heaven has spoken.
