The Protestant Reformation

On October 31, 2017, our church held a service by the Monument of Martin Luther at Lake Montebello @ Hillen Road in East Baltimore in celebration of the Quincentennial Anniversary of the "PROTESTANT REFORMATION" (1517-2017).

The evening service was hosted by the Late Deacon Valarie Giggers and husband Walter Giggers.

We parked our cars, set up our tables with pamphlets and other handouts, refreshments and snacks.  As dusk approached, and evening fell upon us, we used our flashlights to mirror in some light on this 'Eve of the Holy".

Throughout the night, in between segments of the program, we sang one of the best-known hymns written and composed by Martin Luther, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”.  We prayed and then watched a reenactment of “The Castle Church Door & The Rest of His Life and Legacy”, Speeches of Martin Luther portrayed by Mr. Clayton Myers, co-worker of Dean Valarie Giggers, who dressed and played the part to a tee! He was very persuasive and spoke so eloquently.

Of the many wonderful outdoor events New Unity Baptist Church has presented over the years, this remembrance is by far one of the fondest ever.

Martin Luther

Born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1483, Martin Luther went on to become one of Western history’s most significant figures. Luther spent his early years in relative anonymity as a monk and scholar. But in 1517 Luther penned a document attacking  corrupt practice such as the selling “indulgences” to absolve sin. His “95 Theses,” which propounded two central beliefs—that the Bible is the central religious authority and that humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not by their deeds—was to spark the Protestant Reformation.

May we forever remember to keep the spark aglow.
