Writing the Vision at the Speed of Life!
Write the Vision Month at New Unity Baptist Church
Here at New Unity, the month of February is designated as Write the Vision Month, a sacred time for reflection, creativity, and spiritual preparation for the times ahead. During the cold, winter solstice, we warm our hearts and minds by coming together as a community to share writings, messages, lessons, poetry, songs, spirituals, liturgical dances, visionings, and more.
This special month is for everyone—from the youngest members of our church to the most senior. We believe that every voice matters and that God’s vision for our community is revealed through the collective faith and creativity of His people. No one is left out—everyone participates.
Our Sunday worship services during this month hold special significance as we begin each gathering by singing “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”, more commonly known as the Negro National Anthem. Written in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson with music composed by his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, this powerful hymn serves as a unifying anthem of hope, resilience, and triumph. Its lyrics inspire us to reflect on the journey of our ancestors and to press forward with faith and determination.
In February, we also honor and celebrate the rich heritage of the African diaspora. Members are encouraged to wear their ethnic attire as an act of remembrance and pride. Through this practice, we recall and honor our ancestors, from the trials of the Middle Passage to the triumphs of resilience, courage, and faith that have carried us to where we are today.
We draw inspiration from the words of the prophet Habakkuk, who declared:
“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it” (Habakkuk 2:2) and we affirm that “the just shall live by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4).
Write the Vision Month is more than an event; it’s a transformative time of faith-building, cultural celebration, and community bonding. It’s a time when we collectively seek God’s direction for our lives, our church, and the work of His Kingdom. Through our creative expressions, spiritual reflections, and cultural pride, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and honor the legacy of those who came before us.
Whether through a heartfelt poem, a powerful message, a stirring spiritual song, or a shared testimony, this month reminds us of the power of faith, the beauty of community, and the importance of boldly declaring the vision God has for us.
Join us this February as we celebrate Write the Vision Month, standing together in faith and unity to prepare for the blessings and challenges of the year ahead. Together, we will declare that the just must live by faith!
