There's a storm brewing in America. A brew far more intense than one born of wispy spirits gathered around a boiling cauldron - and yet, absolutely no less foreboding.
Ariel of Shakespeare's Tempest seems to have said it best in the swell of his wail when he cried out, “hell is empty, and all the devils are here”!
Surely, he had to know that the Euroclydon into which he was about to plunge held as much peril – if not more -than the failing vessel in which burned as he drifted at sea.
Forces today, some of which were thought to have been long overcome, are now all too boastfully rearing their ugly heads once more. Knowing and understanding the baffling and befuddling history of this ‘royal, peculiar, chosen’ nation, so miserably flawed with racism, sexism, xenophobia, nativism, misogyny, and other ugly imps we had hoped for our 'better angels' to emerge by now.
But what we did not think - nor were we prepared for - was the unabashed public display of such boorish behavior. By definition, democratic republics compositionally represent the will of the people. And so, what does it say or suggest if the denizens of the land of the free and the home of the brave are largely silent and withdrawn? What has happened, what has changed? Has the conscience of the nation been seared - its high-standing moral core hijacked? Or has it been simply revealed?
Presidential speechwriter, Edmund Burke said that “all that’s necessary for evil to triumph is for enough good men -and may I quickly add, ‘women’ - to do nothing”. But ‘nothing from nothing leaves nothing’. Surely, there is more to offer than gross emptiness. Does anyone think that the mixed bromides of stale seltzer (wine) (Matthew 9:17) and flavorless salt (Matthew 5:13) can calm the lurching leviathans within our troubled seas?
Scripture teaches that we are all God’s children and that He loves us one and all (John 3:16). Period! My friend, do you think that the Church is on the right course? Have our leaders delegated the soundness of the vessel, and thus the safety and welfare of the passengers, to an untested petty officer? Petty, indeed!
From Aeneid to Homer to Captain Kirk and beyond travelers have sought their destined star but has the Ole Ship of Zion lost her bearing?
Is there no North Star, no magnetic gravitation, no G-force, to pull her safely to wholeness and salubrity during the terror and fright of this dismally dark, dank hour? Watchmen, what of the night? (Isaiah 21:11).
Sirens of individualism, self-interest, disinterest, self-indulgence, indifference, and apathy must be ignored with all diligence and determination lest the ship runs aground and becomes hopelessly adrift in its errings.
There’s a storm a brewing and the Captain is calling for ALL HANDS ON DECK! Who will answer, who will man up, and who shall go? (Isaiah 6:8)?
